Pause a moment to remember the crew of the Penlee Lifeboat and others who were lost 40 years ago, today.

There is a connection although admittedly tenuous with the our Region in that at one time the one and only RAF SAR Squadron 275 was mainly based at RAF Thornaby on Teesside with its Bristol Sycamores which were occasionally deployed at other RAF Stations when required, one of a number of firsts in the ASR World for Thornaby which included the Wartime "Thornaby Bag" (an air dropped survival bag with essentials in like chocolate and ciggies along with matches and Flares strapped to a Lifejacket) and the first air dropped Lifeboat (AB1) designed by Uffa Fox an example of which is now at the Sunderland Air Museum, apparently it was used at Thornaby.
The Penlee tragedy was a true example of the courage of all Lifeboat Men and SAR Squadrons especially those Aircrew hanging on the wire.
