The Mersey Fast Carriage Lifeboats were introduced in 1986 and the last one RNLB Silvia Burrell, was built in 1993. In all 38 were built to replace Oakley and Rother Class Lifeboats and they had to fit into existing boathouses. This limited their dimensions to an overall length of 38ft and a beam of 12ft 6ins. The early ones were built with Aluminium Hulls but by the time 'MARY MARGARET' came along they had been using Fibre Reinforced Composite (FRC). This speeded up the Builds as the RNLI wanted to have fast lifeboats at all stations by 1990. The hull is divided by Four Bulkheads giving five compartments including a survivors cabin forward for 10 people.

MARY MARGARET's hull was completed by Green Marine and the fitting-out was done by William Osborne's. She was built in 1992 at a cost of £678,261, paid for from bequests by Denis A. S. Williams and Mary Margaret Williams.
She has twin 285 hp Caterpillar 3208T engines and was based at Kilmore Quay from December 1992 until April 2004 when she joined the Relief Fleet.
