Arriving today for the Tyne Bulk Terminal on a voyage which commenced at Port Arthur, USA

It was good to find that legs can again be stretched by a healthy walk along the south pier which has been closed off for many a long month

Am I correct in thinking that what appear to be folding frames on her deck are there to facilitate the carrying of deck cargo?
Pardon my ignorance!

Probably yes to your question
When ships came over from the Baltic with pit props some props would be placed vertically in cleats on the bulwarks to hold the deck cargo in position. However, quite often that did not work causing the ship to list providing photographers with dramatic shots :D

There is a photo on the Shipspotting site which shows her with a deck cargo of what seem to be sections of wind turbine towers.

One from the archives taken if I remember correctly in Tyne Dock
I don't have a date but I would say definitely a post 1960 shot, although I haven't the evidence to prop this up. Pity I didn't keep a log at the time. I must have been barking mad. :D

I doubt that the EO would ever see a pit prop, the supports today more likely for logs, lumber or other specialised cargo such as the turbine towers mentioned.
