Out of curiosity, when did shipping cease to use Dunston staithes?
For some reason I never ever attempted to find this location or see ships there during my various forays to the Tyne during the 60s!

Ron I think it was 1972/73
Think the accolade of being last ship to load at Dunston went to a Paal Wilson ship

Ah it was later than that. They closed the inner side first and then just used the outside berths. One of the last ships to trade to the staithes was CORBANK which had a regular weekly run there right up until the end. When that contract ended the CORBANK went. Check out the Get Carter film which shows a Cory ship transiting the swing bridge with that classic bridge fog horn

As a ship neared the bridge it would give three long blasts on its fog horn to which the bridge would reply with three louder blasts. Then the ship would give a short blast in acknowledgement. An orange light on the bridge would be activated to show which side to come through. A man would appear on the bridge and ring a hand bell to tell pedestrians to make haste. Then the whole bridge would lift up on its central pivot and then swing open.

Happy Days!

Get Carter was also shot near by Swans on the Mid Tyne Ferry Landing where you can see the end of one their super tankers under construction. The end of the film chase was shot at North Blyth, not Cambois, where they drive under the old North Blyth staithes and climb up and run along the top. Alongside is Gardner's SAINT ANGUS and when they supposedly run along to the end of the staithes and reach a beach - by the wonders of cinematography they have been transferred down the coast to County Durham where Carter is shot - dead. Not sure if it was Seaham or Dawdon beaches, think the same one was used for the opening sequence of Aliens 3.

50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK!!

I caught the BIRLING mid-river off Readhead's, presumably after being at Dunston as noted above?

I wonder how accurate the dates are on George Turner's pictures. She is looking very smart in his picture, which makes me think it was after yours.

The BIRLING is the middle ship at Dunston. Although we can't see much of her, my impression is she looked somewhat run-down?
