Well the naval ship has a couple of very large fish hooks there! Surely not a submarine, and something that despite apparent low profile/size needs a couple of very strong anchors.

And what is that on the shell plating. Not a simple doubler plate. Some sort of opening door?

Not a lot to go on.........

Can confirm that they are Admiralty pattern anchor's which dated from about 1841 and weighed in at about 28 cwt.
She's got two but its possible both Anchors were stored on the same side and the chain taken round the bow.
She looks a wee bit to big for a destroyer but may be a small Cruiser of some description.
Build date would be 1880 ish and the picture is priobably pre 1914.

And yes the hatches do open possibly to assist the stowing of the Anchor.

Without more to go on its very difficult to come up with anything positive.

.... or did they carry under-deck torpedoes to be launched via these doors?

To be honest George, I doubt it. If torpedo's were fitted at the bow they tended to be on the centreline.

Its just a pity we cannot see more of the vessel.
