ACCLIVITY ..... an upward slope

Built by Cammell Laird & Co., Birkenhead, in 1929 as ATHELTARN for the British Molasses Co. Ltd. who employed her mainly on the British coast carrying molasses to company installations that were inaccessible to larger Athel tankers.
On 20/03/33 she was in collision with the Granton based trawler SUCCESSION about 100 miles NE of Aberdeen during a snow storm in heavy seas. Eight members of the trawler crew lost their lives.
Following her sale to Everards in 1952 the tankers sphere of activities widened and her cargoes changed to petroleum products and edible oils.
She was reported passing Antwerp under tow on May 4th 1966 on her way to Belgian ship breakers.
This picture was recorded at South Shields 5th August 1961

.... and still there for me to see on 23 August 1961. So grateful thanks for this particular "blast from the past"!
Just one out of 99 sightings recorded on the Tyne that day (plus 14 at Sunderland)!
