Levenwood X.jpg
Completed in 1945 by G.Brown & Co.(Marine), at Greenock, for the Ministry Of War Transport, as EMPIRE BROMLEY. She was one of the 'Tudor Queen' class of dry cargo coasters based on a prototype of that name which came from Burntisland Shipbuilders in 1941, built for the Queenship Navigation Co.
The Constantine Shipping Co. bought her in 1946 renaming her LEVENWOOD
In 1961 Panex (Overseas) Ltd., London, bought the coaster and had her renamed BASILDON
The following year Don Shipping Co. Ltd. became her registered owner (C.M. Willie & Co. (Shipping) Ltd. as managers
R.S. Braggs & Co. became her managers in 1963
She saw out her days under the Red Ensign sold finally to Belgian breakers of Burcht in 1967
In this view taken 31/05/61 LEVENWOOD has discharged a cargo of cement at Gateshead and is heading downriver about to pass the St.Peters Works of Hawthorn Leslie and the small shipyard of T. Mitchison Ltd. at Friars Goose, Gateshead (closed in 1964)

Super photo as always, and a nice reminder of Constantine and one of my favourite steam coasters.

Hello Ron.
I thought Bishop Auckland was still in our time zone .... although they're often running late north of the Tees. :D

Constantine's were my first employer, £2 a week...80 hours a week and provide your own bike!...Levenwood was on a master painting of the whole fleet, I wonder where the picture and all the models went?

If Paul has his Tardis on standby, I'll accept a teleport to Bishop Auckland .... but suppose will just have to wait for cyclone Lusi to hit in the next few hours!!!!

This is the first day in the 12 we've been away that there's been no sun! .... also likely to bring first rain in same period!
How's spring doing over there?
