Just been watching progress on a vessel similar to this in design which has been in trouble off Norway in bad weather, I can understand the logic of the Lifeboat being launched over the Stern (although I have no experience of them) as having Davits Port and Starboard can be subject to problems with the vessel listing. The vessel concerned off Norway has a list and has one of these Lifeboats launched over the Stern so you would expect the Crew under the Skippers orders to get into the enclosed Lifeboat where they would be protected and Launch it, however the Skipper ordered the Crew to jump over the side into the raging sea :o

Yes, I saw that and I can only presume that the helicopter preferred to lift them out of the water, away from any other structures.

She lost a small fish farm boat she was carrying overbaord.
That has been recovered but guess it might not have been safe to get to lifeboat if the deck cargo was loose
