ZINNIA

Postby HSA31 » Sat Jun 30, 2012 6:53 pm

The Stag Line steamer ZINNIA alongside Spillers at Gateshead, having just arrived with a cargo of grain in 1964. The ZINNIA was built at Vancouver in 1945 as the maintenance and repair ship HMS PORTLAND BILL before being purchased by Stag Line in January 1951 for £61,700. She was then converted to a dry cargo ship by the Mercantile Dry Dock Co. Ltd. at Jarrow at a cost of £109,171 and renamed ZINNIA . A few months after this photograph was taken she was sold in December 1964 to Liberian flag owners and within six months had arrived at Kaohsiung for breaking uo.

Nice photograph - just a small correction that is the former Spillers Flour Mill (now demolished) at St Lawrence, Newcastle.
