Smulders Projects at Wallsend

Postby Whickham » Sat Apr 29, 2017 12:57 pm

Belgian company Smulders Projects has taken over the former OGN facility at Wallsend and are constructing offshore wind turbine foundations there.
They currently have an order for 11 such foundations for a wind farm off Aberdeen. Hopefully it will drive lots of new ship activity on the Tyne.
This overall view shows new undersea foundations being constructed on the left and topsides (yellow) on the right which have come in by barge.
Smulders are constructing two gantry cranes of 600 tonnes capacity plus a large ring crane that will lift 3,200 tonnes.

View of the yard 13/06/2017. At far left they are constructing the subsea legs.
Next right is a tug with another barge with 4 more sets of topsides (yellow 4 legged structures)
Then the big crane which lifts the topsides onto the subsea legs.
A group of 3 assembled structures with some more topsides in front of them.
Far right an assembled structure with 3 topsides nearby.

FAST SAM alongside at Smulders 06/07/2017. Had she brought those "tubs" or were they produced here in the sheds and she is here to take them out?

Thanks Patrick, that explains their sudden appearance. I was told yesterday by "someone in the know" that they had been made in the shed on site. Just goes to show "what they know". Nowt as they say up here.

Hello,

YSE has been sailing on the Tyne, so here is our Smulders report. The yard certainly seems to be providing plenty of extra ship and barge movements. On 30/7 Northern Rock was alongside discharging, Fast Julia was also discharging and barge UR 98 was alongside.

Fast Julia sailed later, in ballast for Methil.

Northern Rock partially discharged.

Across the river at A&P West was the UR 96 already loaded with a pair of foundations. My guess is that they are for the Beatrice Windfarm in the Moray Firth. See the BE on the name boards. Smulders have contracts for bases for the Beatrice, Aberdeen and Blyth Demonstration windfarms.

Further downriver at the Ocean Berth, the UR 97 was berthed. The barge looks to be fitted up with fixings for the bases and is going to move up to Smulders to load.

And just before you get completely bored, here is one of the gravity bases for the Blyth farm at Riverside Quay.
