The Bowater Paper Corporation owned ships through its subsidiary, the Bowater Steamship Co. Ltd., principally to service the company's paper mill near Ellesmere Port.
Built to replace chartered tonnage a group of six vessels were ordered by the company in the early 1960's, designed to carry pulp wood or baled pulp from North America or the Baltic. Their hulls were strengthened against ice and were rather beamy in relation to their length, there were four holds built without pillars or obstructions. Decks and hatches were strengthened with deck cargoes in mind. The ships had an attractive livery with pale cream upper works complimenting Brunswick Green hulls and light green boot topping.
When completed in 1960 by builders Wm. Denny & Bros.of Dumbarton PHYLLIS BOWATER was the fifth of the six ships, she was one of the last of the Bowater fleet to be sold off when the company disposed of its ships in 1973. She subsequently carried the names CHARLOTTE (Cypriot flag), TASSOS K (Greek flag), MALERO M1 (Panamanian flag), NAZ K (Turkish flag).
Ship breakers at Alang claimed her in 2001.
Here the ship is departing the river after receiving attention at Brigham & Cowan's, South Shields.
