Named after a General Manager of the Gas, Light and Coal Company, which evolved into the North Thames Gas Board.
One of a group of four colliers, two of which were built at Sunderland and two at Aberdeen, they were powered by steam reciprocating machinery.
Their distinctive funnel markings of red triangles and black bands were symbolic of flames and grate bars.
Built in 1954/55 the four steamers became redundant before their time by the industries switch from coal gas to natural gas, and all were sold off by 1970.
Here JOP is arriving on 24th April 1965, on one of her countless visits to the river.
