1950-1951 Rebuilt by Barclay Curle to carry 830 troops, then employed as troop ship to Cyprus, Celon and Malaya

Troop ships were employed during the Suez Campaign but with the cessation of National Service in Britain troop carriers were no longer needed for government contracts.
In 1961,using their surplus ships, B & I initiated a series of educational cruises for school children which proved an immediate success, and consistently popular, attracting about 37,000 children and 10,000 teachers annually.
With a gathering of young passengers on deck, and well-wishers on Tynemouth pier to see them off, Dunera is here departing the river on 13th May, 1961
