HMS Cavalier

HMS Cavalier R-73 (later D-73) seen entering her once new permanent home at 'I think' the old Hawthorne Leslie yard on Tyneside.

Now looking much better but unfortunetly at Chatham dockyard on the Thames, she sure was fast at a service speed of 37 knots from her twin Parsons geared steam turbine engines.

Once the fastest ship in the fleet after a race with, I think, HMS RAPID.
Also went to the aid of SAINT BRANDAN, owned by Gardners, when she caught fire in the Irish Sea.

I sort of remember something about that as well...........

They had Parsons Geared Turbines developing 40,000 shp equivalent to 36.75 knots.
However none of the class got anywhere near that on trials. CAESAR managed 34.294 Kts and Cavalier only managed 30 kts at 312.5 rpm on a trials displacement of 2,327 tons.

To be fair Cavalier probably managed a bit better as her speed was measured by log.

Just noticed Mike's slip of the pen in his first post as well. He ment to say Chatham was on the Medway.

This is her getting ready to leave Hebburn. I'd forgotten that she got a very unusual coat of dark grey paint before she left.
Perhaps that is why Cammell Laird were allowed to advertise on her side. The tug is SUN LONDON.
According to Wikipedia she arrived back in Chatham 23 May 1998 so that would date these photos to a few days before.
EDIT: But logmaster Kevin tells me (and with proof) that 1998 should read 1999. These photos were taken 14/05/1999.
