JOHN BEAUMONT (1876) paddle steamer

Postby northeast » Thu Sep 01, 2016 6:33 am

Has anyone come across a paddle steamer JOHN BEAUMONT being based on the Tyne probably in early 1900's, she was built 1876 for the North/South Queensferry service, redundant from that in 1892 and one source says she was on the Tyne before being sold and noted by 1920 as a ferry at Smyrna.

Are you sure about the paddles? MNL has her as screw in 1879. Not listed in MNL in 1900 and before that owned by TW Ward of Sheffield.

Just found the reason in Duck & Lang. Originally screw, not liked, difficult to steer. Sank after a collision with NQ pier. Raised, fitted with new engine & paddles.

But I guess you already knew about this because it goes on to say that later she then went to the Tyne and thence to Smyrna.

However Hartlepool Mail 17/05/1898 has:

"Portsmouth, May 16 - The paddle-steamer John Beaumont arrived here from Hartlepool for Lytham with defects in machinery."

Shields Gazette 07/03/1890: The last of a famous ferry (talks about her withdrawal from service on the Port Edgar - North Queensferry service due to the opening of the Forth Bridge)

York Herald 27/05/1896: Sailed Hull May 22 for Coast.

Glasgow Herald 14/01/1895: For sale apply Thos W Ward, Sheffield.

Hull Daily Mail 01/04/1895: For sale, the really first class, well-built Iron Ferry Paddle Steamer, specially designed for passenger & vehicular ferry traffic. etc Apply TW Ward, Sheffield.

The Stage 11/07/1895: Musicians wanted for pleasure steamboat John Beaumont, licensed to carry 244 passengers & running between Hunstanton, Skegness, Cromer etc.

Stamford Mercury 26/07/1895: The pleasure steamer JB took a small party from Wisbech to Skegness. The trip was enjoyable, but financially a failure.

Stamford Mercury 06/09/1895: The Wash Pleasure Company's steamboat JB etc (mentions trips)

October 1894: Offered for sale in Belfast & Dublin newspapers. Apply to TW Ward.

The Scotsman 23/06/1893: Queensferry Passage - JB will not sail for cart traffic for 22nd & 23rd June. Passenger traffic as normal.

Haven't come across the actual end of service.

Many thanks Dave, you are a star at digging up old newspapers (no fish and chips in them though) :D
You may have noticed the Clyde site is just extending to cover east coast Scottish yards and I came across this one when editing her builders, also noted D&L entry as you have.
Will build all this into a revised edit, thanks.

Thanks George. Just added a couple of extra items at the bottom of the list. The last one suggesting that the Forth ferry service continued a little longer than previously suggested. Also went forward from 1898 through to the start of 1902 and didn't find anything else.

Just looking through some old photos from the 1890's and I see I have a photograph of the John Beaumont Steamship tied up at the dock in front of the Forth Bridge from the north. The photo bears the note "11881 J.V. " whatever that means. The photo was with a batch of Sebah & Joaillier of Constantinople from the the late 1800's.
