SPEEDWAY (1970)

SPEEDWAY (7011462), Elder Dempster Lines Ltd., 1160gt,
completed Robb Caledon, Leith, 5-1970
1970 SPEEDWAY - 1970 CLEARWAY - 1978 O'SHEA EXPRESS - 2009 AHMED N (still in service, Tanzania flag)

Albert Weller slide, Southampton, circa August 1970:

Scope for confusion with this one! She carried the name for only a few months until renamed, whereupon she swapped names with Elder Dempster's previous CLEARWAY (built 1968)! Luckily, there were clear design differences between the two which confirmed I had identified the correct one!

An unusual venture into car-carrying by Elder Dempster, seemed unconnected with their trade, or did they run to West Africa maybe?

Poole to Lagos, that was what was in back of my mind (where few venture to go), so they must have been used I guess for 'own careful owner' vehicle exports i.e. any old wreck.

She seems to have been the only one of the four to transfer to Poole/Lagos.
