Acheron was of the 16 completed A class boats and the only non contract one to enter service. Built at Chatham, launched 25 March 1947, their other boat Adept was cancelled. Devonport did a pair which were both launched in 1945, Ace scrapped and Achates sunk in target trials, both in 1950 and never completed.

This image shows her with no pendant number, the policy of painting them up had just been discontinued in the RN, Acheron being S.61

On this visit she arrived with sister Artemis berthed ahead of her as the link..

Sister Alliance is a museum boat in Gosport, the old home of the sub service at HMS Dolphin and latterly SM1.

Why she is up in the air is ludicrous, boats live underwater. In the circumstances what we need is this...
