Torpedo boat

Postby Whickham » Sat Jan 18, 2014 11:17 am

I received the attached photo this morning with the following message:

"I’m an ex senior chief from the Royal Danish Navy, and during “mop-up” of the old material command buildings this picture was found.
It’s surely not a Danish ship but as it’s bearthed in front of Elswick yard I thought that you might know something about it as we navy people are wondering!
An idea is that it could have been taken when Denmark bought some Whitehead torpedos, and maybe it was a ship used for the tests.
But which ship we wonder!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Best regards
Erling Baldorf, SCPO RDN"

I can't find a match at the moment. I did wonder whether she was the AURORA of 1893

See: http://www.tynebuiltships.co.uk/A-Ships/aurora1893.html

But I have found some crude drawings of her on the web and they show her to have one funnel.

Any thoughts anyone?

The Chinese Fei Ting, built by J S White at Cowes and bought by Armstrong in March 1894. Modified and sold to China, leaving the river in June 1895. See "Warships for Export" by Peter Brook, published by the WSS in 1999.

Excellent. Thank you Dennis, unfortunately I have recently returned that particular book to the local library and missed the reference :(

Did she get an Armstrong yard number?
