How to sink a sub with an anti aircraft frigate, which Puma is.

1 - Load squid anti submarine mortar with green paint projectiles. 3 in number.
2 - Sight a periscope somewhere, preferably very very close.
3 - Ensure sub knows you have seen it by waving bottles of rum and boxes of blue liner fags.
4 - Let sub 'sneak away'.
5 - Wait interval to consume rum and have one all round.
6 - Fire said squid mortar. Plop. Plop. Plop.
7 - Bang. Bang. Bang. Green paint is everywhere in the sea.
8 - Sub comes UP through green paint blinding periscope thinking it is still underwater.
9 - Sub is now well airborne still going UP, blinded by the paint.
10 - Aim...Fire.
11 - Anti aircraft frigate becomes anti submarine frigate.

Puma, her 3 RN sisters Jaguar, Leopard, Lynx, + 3 India operated were the Type 41 Anti Aircraft frigates.
Chichester, Lincoln, Llandaff, Salisbury were the Type 61 Aircraft Direction frigates.
All used the rather pedestrian ASR 1, Admiralty Standard Range 1, heavy oil or diesel engines.
8 were installed developing 12,380 bhp coupled to the propeller shafting through hydraulic couplings, oil operated reverse and reduction gear boxes giving a speed of 25 knots. At a push.
The Porpoise and Oberon class submarines used the same diesels, supercharged, with no connection to the shafts, indirect drive, the electric motors driving the 2 shafts.
All were fitted to resilient mounts to help reduce vibration and noise, which was ferocious.

During her mods the original problematic STAAG twin 40mm was replaced with a single 40mm L/60 Bofors abaft the main mast, her squid anti sub mortar remained on the quarterdeck.
