Clearly chips and back-alley cricket are far more important to members of NEM than a silly old Miss World ..... must be an age thing :)

Peter,
That was the one, best in the town. The post office was run by Les and Florrie Brown when i lived in South Street a lovelly couple, the shop on the other corner was run by the Embletons.
And George, most definately an age thingy.

Kevin

My parents used to own the shop before Les Brown took it over in 1958 or 59.

Peter,
I'm sure i would have gone into the shop when your parents had it as we were at South Street then. Could never work out why it was called South Street as it ran East-West and West Street ran North-South.

I've been so distracted by the Hebburn love-in between Pete and Kevin, and memories of sixpenneth of chips .... recalling that for many years Mars bars and other confectionary was also 6d a bar. (For Patrick and others who think they are too young to remember that is 6d [denarii ... old pennies ....!}, worth 2.5p today [since 1971]). Those good old days when Lsd meant something different from what is generally associated with those letters now!
The other candidate advanced to Rob in response to his initial query on Mariners' List was the Duchess of Bedford, formerly Henrietta Tiarks. Again, web search images are quite supportive of that notion but I just think there would have been a degree more formality at the launch, even for minor "royalty", than seemingly displayed for, more probably, Miss World.

Ron, that has been overtaken by Kevin's total dilemma about South Street and West Street.
If there was also a North Street running east-west and an East Street running north-south ....
then the answer is they formed a square ... doh!

.... or radiating from a central point such as North, South, East and West Streets around the old Middlesbrough Town Hall near St Hilda's. At least our Middlesbrough forefathers seemed to get their compass directions right!

Just to clear things up, there was no North Street but there was an East Street and it too ran the wrong way.

Hebburn must be a terrible place to get out of then, it's amazing that you ever found your way to South Shields
