Tyne Pride- The Biggest ??

Stated as the biggest ship built on the Tyne the tanker Tyne Pride, was it ???

Might have been in 1976 but EVERETT F. WELLS was completed IN 1977 and had a dwt 263,382 tons. Only in service for nine years before being broken up !

In view of Mike's photo above, and others elsewhere on the internet, showing the TYNE PRIDE completed and underway, I take this OPPORTUNITY to ask if she was actually renamed before delivery?

I was working at Swans at the time and I only ever knew her as TYNE PRIDE. However I think all the supertankers made a "one way trip" out of the river for drydocking and trials (not necessarily in that order). Some of these drydockings were quite extended to complete or rectify work that should have been done on the Tyne. I surmise therefore that there would be ample to time to take photos of her underway before she was accepted by her owners.

This vessel after completion was laid up at Walker Naval Yard for quite some time, until a new owner could be found. After completion I was sent down to work on the Russian tanker Gerio Kerch at Haverton Hill for about 10 weeks and that was rather an experience! different from the way we worked on Tyneside. Before she was completed I was called back to tyneside to reactivate the Tyne Pride for her new owners. They were Greeks but they would not tell us who the owners were. It wasn't until drydock in Hamburg that we found out it was Livanos and the ship was to be named Opportunity registered at Chios which is a Greek island I do believe. The funnel was also painted in Livanos colours. I think the Greeks got a very good bargain when they purchased the vessel. Micky.
