Reference to the achievement of Messrs Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson and Co., Ltd., in completing the first two new type tankers of the British Tanker Co.'s big programme was made with the trials of the British Endurance off the Tyne.
Launched from their Neptune yard on 19 August 1936 when the following day the first vessel, British Fame underwent trials and was handed over.
Speaking at the luncheon on board the British Endurance, Mr T. Morison, managing director of the Neptune yard, said it was a matter of general knowledge that the British Tanker Co. and Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. had placed orders for 18 ships at a time when shipbuilding was in the depths of the worst depression ever known. His company had started with 2 ships, British Fame and British Endurance, and had got another four.
The technical details associated with the vessels exceeded anything he had ever known; the owners had aimed at getting the best tankers possible, and, as a shipbuilder, he thought they had succeeded. An outstanding feature was the excellent accommodation provided for the officers and crew, especially the lower ratings.
