J class destroyer Janus was the last of 13 J, K, and N class destroyers lost in action during W W 2 on 23 January 1944.

Unfortunately there appears no definitive details of her sinking off Anzio with heavy loss of life whilst in company with leader Jervis which was damaged in the same early morning attack.

Over many years i have noted 5 differing accounts of her loss which is extremely unusual and unfortunate.

One thing for sure is her company would scarcely have been aware of what hit them, the only certainty of the cause was it originated from an aircraft launched weapon but not direct bombing.

Please find some details of Janus here, she also suffered more than her fair share of damage in the preceding 4 years.
