TSL - Tyne Slipway & Engineering

TSL - Tyne Slipway & Engineering

Postby Western Quay King » Sun May 20, 2012 3:19 pm

Not quite ship building as such but this remains one of the few working slipways and boat yards on the Tyne - this is TSL - Tyne Slipway & Engineering at South Shields, photographed 17th May 2012. This slipway is used for repairs etc to the Shields Ferries (Nexus).

Am I right in thinking that the building with the black stripes is the old Pilot House?

Also I wonder how many yards have been on this location?

The Rennoldsons, TD Marshall maybe. The original Readheads must be close by.

Had always assumed the Pilots Watch House was at the Lawe Top - currently up for sale.

These photographs were taken back in 1999:

Yes, that's certainly the case. I just have a vague memory of large letters painted on the black stripes. Green & White? Was it a harbour office? Need another old git like me, but one who still has a memory.

There were TWO buildings.

The one above the Slipway was the Pilots Office and the one round the corner was the Pilots Lookout House.

That's a 'Cracker' young Kevin.

Must be Dave and George in an earlier life on the Foreshore. Far to young for us!!

The 'Graffiti' looks interesting as well!

I assume the Wall to the right with the Foyboats is Readheads Landing. The area in the foreground was used for Shipbuilding until it became a Woodyard.

If that's Shadwell Street and Pilot Street, Amy Flagg lists:-
Robert Wallis and his Successors.
William and Catherine Forster, c 1773-1791.
James Evans and his Son. 1788-1831.
John Wright. 1773-1803.
Messrs Attley, Swan and Brown. 1803-1808.
J & P Laing. 1818-1830.
T D Marshall & Son. 1839-1859.
Thomas W Wawn. 1846-1852.
Blumer & Bushell. c 1847-?
J P Rennoldson & Sons. 1863-1929.
W P Greenwell. c1857-1865.
Readhead and Softley 1864-1872.
John Softley. 1874-1875.
John Readhead & Company. 1872....
and
Charles Rennoldson & Co 1913-1930.

So plenty to chose from!!
