Greenwells

Shell Bermuda tanker HELDIA comes into the river and is swung by tugs before going alongside at Greenwells Quay.

HELDIA was built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend in 1955

I am advised that I probably have got the caption wrong here. It is more likely that the HELDIA has discharged at Corporation Quay, head up river and she is now being turned around before sailing. I was there and took the photo but porridge for brains these days.

Surely Corporation Quay was not a tanker berth? I thought dry cargo only?

No I think your right Dave.

Greenwells Head out would be a much more appropriate place for her.

Apart from that She's a TANKER and I'm not aware that Sunderland had an oil discharge berth big enough to take her.

Corporation Quay, as George states was for dry cargo only.

There used to be oil storage tanks at the east end of Corpration Quay, and a railway siding near them.

And would it be 'Normal' for a Tanker of her size 555 ft x 69 ft to berth there and discarge, Stephen?

I can remember tankers being there in the 60's
In the photo she is being turned either after leaving Corp Quay or on her way in.
Cheers,
Steve.

Steve sent me this photo from a Port of Sunderland handbook, which clearly shows a tanker (Shell?) in the position that he was talking about. The book was dated 1967/68.

He asked me to post it until he masters the art himself.

CHINKOA.
In B.I. Fleet from 1967-1972.

7,102 Gross. 9,670 Dwt.
6 Cly Doxford Diesel giving a trials speed of 16.33 Knots by her Builders, Barclay, Curle & Co Ltd. Glasgow.
Scrapped in Spain 1972.

OIL.

Oil is the Port's principal inward commodity. There are four main storage and distribution depots which are regularly supplied by sea. These were owned at the time (1967) and operated by Gulf Oil Limited, Mobil Oil Company Limited, Pertrofina Limited and the Regent Oil Company Limited. Supplies were brought to the installations mainly from coastal and near Continental refineries and discharged by direct pipe line connections at the quays into storage tanks for subsequent delivery by road and rail to industrial, commercial and domestic users in North East England. The level of petroleum imports in 1966 was about 300,000 tons a year.

An enlarged, so somewhat blurred, view of the HELDIA in Tees Bay, taken by Albert Weller on an unknown date (but with the old yellow Shell funnel!):
