From the web:

“Protector” was built in 1907 by Rennoldson at South Shields on the Tyne.
On New Year’s Eve 1916, “Protector” left the Tyne to escort a vessel inwards; the crew, looking forward to a swift return to celebrate the New Year, never saw 1917.
“Protector” was devastated by a mine in the entrance to the Tyne and was sunk with the loss of all 19 men aboard. The oldest man lost was aged 70 and the youngest was just 16.
All of these men were from Tyneside.

With a small photo of the PROTECTOR which is the same as the second one posted by Kevin.

Looking at the first picture of Protector from Tynebuoy in detail I would say it's not a photo, it's a painting!

Yes, that would also be borne out by the later picture posted at the same time as the launch party.

However looking in detail at the first two "pictures" I wonder if they are the same vessel. Very similar but differences in the position of lifeboat and the lower bridge area. She was only around for 9 years, would these changes have happened?

Quite a detailed history of the Tyne pilots by Ken Lubi at the following link:

http://www.tyneareasc.org.uk/peopleandplaces.html#Tyne

The article only mentions one PROTECTOR.

I think the painting is an artists impression 'and a very good one at that' not long after she was commissioned!

The launch picture and my second photo also 'match', the anchor is the same and the bow.

However there's no reason why Protector was not modernised some time after her launch, but the 'painting and the photo's' also match, if you blow up the painting there is also a foresail (folded up) and the search light and engine room vent cowls, bridge etc are as identical as can be'
The main differance is the accomidation painting is white in the painting (maybe as launched) and probably painted brown at a later date.

'I think' there was a copy (or maybe the original) in South Shields libary

I think the lowest one in the series which is the only actual photo is correct in detail, but the artist has used some 'licence' to fill in the open section below the bridge to make it look solid fronted and white, also some difference in the support section flanking the bridge.
So the same vessel but a different view from the artist, not uncommon I think.

Sorry, got confused between my Tynesiders and Tynebuoys earlier in the thread.
