North Eastern NoI

Apart from Leslies opposite no other info, no date on the reverse. Paul has been delving away and found a North Eastern but so far no NoI.

All lined up commemorating something. What is that black object up front, looks a bit like a movie camera? Also is there something alongside, on the port side? There is an expanse of white behind the gentry.

Re: The name, its quite common to have the first in the series as just the name, because you don't at the time know that there is a No 2 and No 3. No 1 could be added later when 2 and 3 (say) are around. Also why NORTH EASTERN? North-Eastern Marine the engine builders?

Don't think it's a camera though i haven't a clue what it is or what's behind.

Don't know whether this was the one that Paul found:

NORTH EASTERN
In 1885 MNL Owned by Wallsend Slipway Ltd
Built Gateshead in 1864, 26grt, 20nrt, 50.0 x 16.6 x 5.5ft, wood, screw, 9nhp

Not there in 1890

She looks a bit longer than 50ft

Quite a puzzle, wooden hull maybe 80-100 ft long and a small cargo hatch or maybe a hopper?
Thought might be North Eastern Railway but nothing there matches that I can see.
Could be an early WSS Tyne branch outing ....

No I can't see Paul there. Unless he couldn't make the meeting for some reason.

The black object on the bow looks to me like an old winch as you can make out the gear ring to operate it and the 'white behind the gentry' is a tarpaulin over the boats hold.

Yes, I can see that now, but looking at the magnified image I would say that both winch and tarpaulin are on the (barge ?)alongside.

Yes, I think the Tarp and Winch are a Red Herring. I think she is next to a Barge.
