The interim bridging measures I suppose meant smaller Hatches giving plenty of Side Deck space to ship Containers giving the vessels a dual purpose role. Ron@?

These sisters were built on the SD14/15 design dating from mid-1960's when this hatch size would be normal .... but if you look at other late 70's general cargo ships without that heritage then you would often find twin-hatches giving good access to the holds but also strengthened for containers, e.g. Bank Line of the period. Presumably Lamport & Holt were content with this, given the later and more limited development of containerisation in their South American trading area.
