Location is Harton Staiths at South Shields. To the far right is Mill Dam and the two Buildings are the Custom House, now an arts centre, and the Old River Police HQ, now flats.

Harton Staiths have also been redeveloped and a new call centre built which has fantastic views of the River.

She may be passing Tilbury but not in 1969. It would have been in the 1950s before the top- hat was fitted to the funnel.

Unfortunately, Peter has not been looking in to NEM for a while, so is unlikely to respond.
However, from my previous contacts with him several years ago he was always accurate in his dating of photos, so I feel it is safe to say his photo was from 1969 as stated. (Like myself, he would still have been a relative youngster at that time!)
Maybe his "top hat" had been removed for some reason?
