Shaw Saville & Albion took delivery of Afric from the Vegesack yard of Bremer Vulcan in 1957. Sisterships were ARAMAIC and ARABIC, the trio were the first non refridgerated cargo ships built for their owners and reflected the increasing amount of general cargo available in the homeward direction from Australia and New Zealand.
Afric was renamed ORITA in 1968 while being managed by the Pacific Steam Navigation Co., and used on their Liverpool to South America run.
The Hong Kong Island Shipping Co. bought her in 1972 and renamed her HONG KONG ISLAND.
She arrived at Inchon for demolition in May 1973
