Nice old Ketch arrived at the marina this morning, later departed for Newcastle quay

Here we go !

She is a restored Baltic Trader called Kommandoren, she was built in Denmark in 1891 at Karresboeksminde.

She is now owned by by Hays ships Ltd and undertakes some corporate hospitality work, In earlier times these chubby little cargo carriers were frequent visitors to British Ports bringing cargoes such as Baltic timber and usually departing with a hold full of coal.

Some traded from the Baltic across the north Atlantic to Greenland and others sailed salted fish from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia to Spain, Portugal and Italy, and others traded with central American countries. It would be great to think that she, like many of her sister ships, might have previously traded to the Tyne and visited Albert Edward Dock..
