Hawthorn Leslie (Engineers) Ltd - St Peter's

Just out of interest (to me anyway), here is the same section of map from the 1859 survey. Almost in the centre of the map is Rose House which is marked on the other map as Rowe's House. I think the latter is more likely it's real name as it could well be the dwelling of William Rowe a notable shipbuilder from 1756 to 1810.

Hawthorn Leslie covers the area shown as Peter's Dock, the land having been purchased in 1870. It was formerly the yard of T & W Smith and (the other) Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Co.

To the left of Peter's Dock is marked an "Iron Shpbuilding Yard". I think this is the yard of John Rogerson & Co. John Rogerson was a prime mover of the Tyne General Ferry Co and many of the ferries were built at his yard.

This is from 1898 and it says Rowe's House. I note there were two Manure & Chemical works "Tyne Manure & Chemical Works" far left and "St. Peter's Chemical Manure Works" bet they were fun places to work.

Yes and note chemical manure and not chemical fertilizer. I understand one of the main ingredients was rotting carcasses. So two bone yards sitting next to each other !!

In between the two "Bone Yards" we have the "St. Peter's Foreign Cattle Sanatorium".
