Kevin sent me this view of Tyne Dock taken in about 1947.
Look at all those "boxes" in the foreground, where Riverside Quay is now.

Wonder what they are, too early for packaged timber! Maybe it's stacks of loose timber?
Were the slipways by the entrance used by TIC for their own craft?

Could be TIC but they had a main workshop on the north bank of the river at Howdon.
So don't know who ran that slipway.

Came across this press cutting, dated June 1920, describing the expansion of William Hill's boat building business into Tyne Dock.
Don't know whether this could be the business next to the slipway?
I just think they would have mentioned in this cutting that they had a slipway if they had one.

Only previous mention to this business that I have seen is: http://www.tynebuiltships.co.uk/HillW.html

They wouldn't have needed such a slipway for the small launches etc. mentioned in the article.

OK one answer is easy. PIT PROPS.

The area on the west side of Tyne Dock was used for timber storage and the short jetties are marked as "Prop Jetties". Operators were Edmund Robson & Co, James Henderson etc..
Pit Props were a standard length, each layer being stacked at right angles to the one below.

The Slipway is not listed as being in use and was probably an old building or repair yard.

The only repair yards operating from Tyne Dock at the time were T R Dowson & co Ltd (Down River Side) and Anthony Proud Ltd. (Tyne Dock West Side.). Neither yard had a slipway.
