South Shields Ferry Landing

South Shields Ferry Landing

Postby Whickham » Mon Nov 05, 2018 5:09 pm

Kevin has just sent me this view of the South Shields Ferry Landing taken in ???? maybe mid fifties?
Looks like whale factory ships at Middle Docks and maybe SEGB MITCHAM at the buoys.
But what about the vessel in the foreground.

Could that say MOODY on the bow?

If so could she be : http://shippingandshipbuilding.uk/view. ... ssel=MOODY

Did she come north sometime after MNL 1940????

Looks good to me Dave, she was one of 4 sisters probably built for taking coal into Grimsby Fish Dock for bunkering trawlers. I have a note that one sister BASKCOMB was on the Tyne in 1950's. Not sure where I got that info from. If someone has MNL's from 1950's then would be good to look at owners for both.

The tug at the extreme left appears to have France Fenwick funnel colours and in the background it seems that the Ore Quay gantry is under construction which would date the picture in the fifties. The funnel colours on the barge could be those of trawler owners Richard Irvin & Sons who still operated numerous steam trawlers then.
Regards, Dennis.

And possibly both of Salvesen's whale factory ships on the left. We also had some earlier photo(s) showing trawlers on these buoys.

Where's Mr. Hood, thought he had some MNL's that might help?

Hi Gents

The tug alongside Harton Staiths is the France Fenwick tug 'Ryhope' she is one of the three ex US Army tugs and did not arrive on the Tyne until October 1950

Both the MOODY and the BASKCOMB were owned by Richard Irvin & Sons Ltd, Fish Quay, North Shields in 1947.
Manager was Sir John H Irvin, Albert Quay, Aberdeen.

Still in 1955.

Thanks for confirmation, Paul. Would be good to find more photos of these two expats from Grimsby.

Just looked up the JEFFS, she was on the Tyne under Irvin's ownership as well.

LETTEN's Managing Owner was Philip Bauer, 9/11 Jamaica Street, London, E1.

MNL 1947 and 1955.

Thanks Paul.
