While on a short stroll along the Keelmans Way at Gateshead the other day I passed a reminder of days gone by when I made visits to this spot in pursuit of ship photography. The ship turning area near the east end of Newcastle quay was, if my memory serves me correctly, marked by an indicator/information board mounted on the framework still standing to this day
On Wednesday May 31st, 1961, CITY OF JOHANNESBURG was captured as she entered the turning area, there appear to be four local tugs on hand to assist in the ensuing procedure. Close by, dredging operations by craft of the TIC seem to be in hand at the time
Other photo's of mine on NEM showing vessels at the turning area include BUENOS AIRES, MARENGO, and passing downriver, LEVENWOOD.
The small shipyard of T Mitchison Ltd. is glimpsed in the background of the LEVENWOOD photo
