Also welcome on board John ... but you are going to have to enlighten me as to your moniker CLYDEBRAE for a Preston lad!? (even with Ben Line connection the other side of Scotland!)

Sometimes I wish I had a decent memory! I am scratching my head trying to recall why and when THPA utilised Impex House. I think it was only briefly, and it must have been back in the late 70s/early 80s (after ICI?). I know I went across from Queens Square to see somebody there but .....! Just wondering if it might have been in the aftermath of the Peckston collapse (was that 1979?).

.... and now, not sparing John's blushes, I have found the Cockfield Knight history at:
http://www.cockfieldknight.com/index.php/history
It answers my Peckston question. (1980).

Arising from that article, I can also say that somewhere down the line I gleaned a copy of the Bulmer's Blue Book of 1926, including a photocopy of the letter dated May 1926 they sent out with that booklet.

Have a look also at: http://www.cockfieldknight.com/index.php/our-people

Didn't the Pilots use Impex House briefly which could match the THPA connection then?

In 1958-60 the junior clerks of the port used to congregate in the switchboard room of the building where there were 2 nice girls to chat to whilst our B/L's and manifests were checked over 'upstairs' by Mr Bowman and associates...we would then walk together down to Customs & TCC etc............John Berry once accused me of pushing him down the Custom House stairs ...I wouldn't have dared as he as more aggressive than I...but he kept on saying it till he died!

Impex House - Stuart Mussett, later of Peckston Projects and Berry Mussett, started his shipping career in Impex House in the early 50's. Colonel Peckston occupied the panelled room upstairs and Len Ord occupied the other side - Stuart had time to get the train to and from home in Redcar over lunchtime - and I am pretty sure Len Ord would have had a close eye on the clock. My first knowledge of the building was in the mid 70's and at that time ICI had tenants occupying Colonel Peckston's old room. Their name will come to me, and their tenancy is referred to in the bundle of deeds. I cannot recall seeing any mention of THPA in any of the paperwork relating to the building.

Clydebrae - has a Ricahrd R Chester/Preston connection. Chester's briefly owned the Clydebrae until she was torpedoed off Scarborough in October 1917. She was salvaged and re-entered service and for many years traded to Preston in Hugh Craig's colours. I honestly cannot recall whether I ever saw her - probably not, as she was broken up in early 1958, at about the time I moved to Lytham St.Annes and before my own interest developed. I also have a Glaswegian granddaughter so it all ties together!!

Albert Chester was declared bankrupt in June 1923. At the time he was living at 73, Oxford Road, Middlesbrough and was described as carrying on business as a Shipowner at Transport House, Bridge Street East, Middlesbrough. He was released from bankruptcy in January 1926 and resumed shipowning later that year with the acquisition of "Monaleen" O.N. 142501 from John Milligen & Co Ltd of Belfast. Albert Chester held 36 shares and Edwin Graham Tyerman the balance of 28 shares. "Monaleen" ran agorund in August 1928 on Marden Rocks, Alnmouth Bay whilst on passage from Hamburg to the Tyne and Berwick and was broken up in situ, her register being closed January 31st 1929.

"Monaleen" aground in Alnmouth Bay - 21st August 1928 - as published in the North Mail and Newcastle Chronicle. You can view a painting of her, in her prime, by visiting : www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/monaleen-121778. You will also see painting of the "Brideen" by the same artist - Charles H Crookham - which was also acquired by Tyerman then Chester.

Perhaps someone can offer a full Chester fleet list, it may elicit more photos and info.

English & Co. would be another for this category?
