The Peppercorn Class K1 2-6-0 mixed traffic steam locomotives which entered service between May 1949 and March 1950 proved to be versatile and useful machines as they worked across the Ex LNER territory in the north east of England. All were withdrawn from BR service between 1962 and 1967. The one example saved for preservation can of course can be seen on the NYMR
1967 was the last year in operation for the Tyneside Third Rail Electric trains. Examples of Metro-Cammel-built electric stock are occupying bay platforms under the station roof.
The lengthy northbound train of vans threading its way past the station is headed by a BR Class 40 diesel-electric loco. Small yellow warning panels, as seen here, began to appear on diesel loco's in 1962 but were phased out in favour of full yellow ends in 1967
