Served them well until broken up at Connah's Quay commencing on 4/1/1960

CALDERGATE
1926, 138grt
Amble Shipbuilding Company, Amble (40), and the last vessel from this small yard
Built for Anglo American, later Esso as shown in her funnel colours
She was registered at Hull
There is a reference in 'Marine News' 1976, p.138 to her being sold to a company called Harrison on the Thames as a bunkering tanker and later as a 'tank hulk' before being sold to breakers at Dartford Creek in October 1975. I had noted her on the Thames in August 1961.

Yes it was set up c 1918 by Palmers to build Concrete Tugs for the British Admiralty and originally called the 'Amble Ferro Concrete Co Ltd'.
They built two Tugs, Yard No 25 Cretebow and Yard No 26 Cretestem in 1919. They then went on to build a number of small vessels, some of which have been mentioned on the Forum.

The Yard was situated on the area known as 'The Braid'. Not sure when it closed as I cannot find the book I'm looking for!

Ref. CRETESTEM, dismantled 1937, hull bombed and sunk in Hendon Dock, Sunderland on 24/05/1940 ... post war, hull dumped on the shore south of the Wear. Did someone once say that a section of her hull is still visible?
