MAKALU in Hartlepool Marina. I am informed she was built in 1944, with a wooden hull, and is a 45' Admiralty class MFV (motor fishing vessel) and registered in Portsmouth. She was converted to a pleasure yacht and is now up for sale.

To go with Stan's photo of the MAKALU in the November issue of TEES PACKET, journal of the Teesside Branch of the WSS/Teesside Ship Society, journal editor Derek Hinds has written the following:
Pictured in Hartlepool Marina, towards the end of August, is the MAKALU an ex 45’ Admiralty class
MFV (Motor Fishing Vessel) that was built in 1944 by J.J. Lawrence & Co. Ltd., at Leith for the Royal Navy,
as MFV 625. It is reported that she served most of her time in the Mediterranean after being deployed to
Algiers in 1944 for harbour duties, before heading to Malta. After the war she returned to Plymouth and
served as a training ship for the Sea Cadet Corps. MFV 625 was converted later into a pleasure motor yacht
by the Malahide Shipyard, near Dublin, Ireland. More recently she has been based in Guernsey and used as
a live aboard yacht. Her hull is of wood construction and she is fitted with a 120hp Foden 6 cylinder diesel
engine driving a single 3 blade manganese bronze propeller. The accommodation consists of 5 berths in 3
cabins fitted out in mahogany, there is a good sized well fitted out galley, a comfortable lower saloon with ‘U’
shaped dinette arrangement to port and with a 2 seater settee opposite, a large overhead butterfly skyl ight
provides plenty of ventilation and natural light. She is at present up for sale in Hartlepool, with a price on her
of £69,950 o.n.o. So, do any of our readers fancy acquiring a smart looking pleasure boat?
