50 YEARS AGO TODAY!

As MARE JADA (6729995), West Germany, 476gt, completed Westerbroek 12-1967
1967 MARE JADA - 1973 LONDONER - 1981 CAROL - foundered 48.13N/5.21W 24.6.85 [Liverpool-Pasajes, scrap iron]

Liverpool - 6 August 1970:

However, the Miramar history shown above does not give her full story!
MN 6/72: sank in the Gironde estuary off Verdon 13/4/72 while trying to reach Bordeaux after developing leaks on a voyage from Rotterdam to Lisbon. One member of her crew was lost. Entry marked as a total loss.
MN 10/72:reported 28/8/72 to have been raised by floating sheerlegs. Work was in progress 24/8/72.
MN 11/72: wreck sold to French shipbreakers.

Somehow, she survived and subsequently became quite well known to us as, first, LONDONER:
Middlesbrough Dock - 8 December 1975:

Hartlepool - 29 August 1976:

Sunderland - 20 September 1981:

... then, later, CAROL:
Sunderland - 26 February 1984:

The MARINE NEWS supplement (journal of World Ship Society) for January 2022 gives a little more detail of her conversion from the MARE JADA wreck into the LONDONER. Interesting to note that work was carried out on Tyneside.

Details are given as follows: The LONDONER name was revived in 1973 when the opportunity was taken to
enter the near and Continental trades with the purchase of a repairing casualty.
Completed in 1967 for German owners, MARE JADA had sank while on a voyage
from Rotterdam to Lisbon in 1972. She was raised and was expected to be
scrapped but was bought by an intermediary company who had her repaired on
Tyneside and offered her for sale. A 1,900 ton deadweight vessel she was
originally fitted with two 30-ton derricks situated on a deck housing between her
two hatches and a single five-ton derrick fitted on her foremast. The two 30-ton
derricks and their housing were removed during her repairs although the five-ton
derrick was retained.
