MARTAND (wrongly headed originally as MALAKAND)

While Albert Weller was taking part in a ship visit in Middlesbrough Dock with the Teesside Ship Society in the early 1960s he took this nice view of an adjacent Brocklebank cargo-liner, but which one?

After studying various sets of photos the only candidate seems to be their MALAKAND, T.& J.Brocklebank Ltd, 8078gt, completed by Hamilton, Port Glasgow, 12-1942. BU Kaohsiung 12.12.66.

Yes, George, I now also agree it is the MALAKAND shown at: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=6264

OR her Hamilton Built Sister MATHERAN which looks to be virtually identical.

MATHERAN was scrapped May 1963, however MALAKAND lasted until December 1966............so does that confirm its MALAKAND??

If you look at the photo of the MATHERAN at: http://www.rhiw.com/y_mor/ships_photos_ ... an_001.jpg you'll probably note quite quickly why I decided it wasn't her!

Malakand did not have radial davits. Funnel is too big for her.
The large boiler room vents are as high as the blue funnel band on
Malakand Also she had a "Signal Mast" above her bridge.

The pic is "Marwarri". The only one of that class to have both lifeboats
close together and the one with bridge wing cabs for some of her
time. Malancha (my first ship) and Macharda were very similar
but with a longer boat deck and lifeboats further apart.

Agree Tony, The Funnel is much higher than Matheran and Malakand and the Signal Mast is different.

Its very dificult to make a judgement as to which ship is which because things do alter during the life of a ship.
For instance I'm looking at a picture of MARWARRI, thought to have been taken in May 1953 and she does not have Cab's but she does have an extra Lifeboat on the boat deck just behind the bridge where the Awning is on Ron's picture.

What we really need is a Tardis so we can nip back to the time and place the picture was taken and check out the name! ;)

One point I missed is the extra lifeboat, I believe it
was added in wartime as she would have carried extra gunners.

However most of the pix in my Brockship file do show this
extra lifeboat on Marwarri and also most of my pix show
her without bridge cabs though she certainly had them
at one time.

This makes me wonder if this pic is actually Martand
that sank in the Hooghly in 1964. All my pix show her
with bridge cabs, she has the shorter boatdeck similar
to Marwarri so precludes Malancha/Macharda.

Tend to forget about Martand due to her sad demise!!

so, arguing against myself, change my opinion and
reckon this pic is "Martand"

p.s. Clicking the + sign on the pic shows what a remarkably clear
full screen picture this is, possibly the best large clear B & W
photo of any ship on my computer ( and there are a lot ).

Many thanks! Just shows, doesn't it, how hard it is if your Tardis isn't around!

I had ruled out the MARWARRI because she did not have the enclosed sections on the front bottom corneers of her superstructure but, although the MARTAND had crossed my mind, I ignored her thinking she had always been in a class of her own, different from those before and after her in the Brocklebank fleet. I should at least have checked that against my own shot of her at: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4790 (click on thumbnail to enlarge to full frame), Even the poorer Box Brownie quality shows you are almost certainly right.

Now I've looked at a series of photos of various of the Brocklebank ships from the mid-30s to early 40s it can be seen how they evolved one after the other with, actually, only fairly minor variations and modifications.

So, MARTAND it is. Thanks again!!
