ESKIMO 1959

I remember seeing the ESKIMO in the Tees in the early 1960s when she was on the new Canada SS Lines service to Canada. Does anyone know how long this service lasted?
The two evening Gazette cuttings are from 1959 and 1960 – I don’t know the exact dates.

Excellent one, Mike, I remember well walking down the road from the station and seeing her funnel as I did so, as she must have been at the very downstream end of Tyne-Tees, port side to quay. The date in my diary is 16 April 1960, presumably the next voyage after the March 9 sailing mentioned in the lower cutting. Must have missed her on earlier calls. Always sticks in my mind as must have been the first Canadian vessel I had ever seen.

George, yes it was great to see some new funnel colours. I don't know exactly when I first saw her. I've lost all my early notebooks & diaries.

My own first and, I think, only sighting of her was on 13 February 1961. The line-up of ships recorded that day at Tyne-Tees/Dent's Wharves was: NOVIAN COAST, LANCASHIRE COAST, NORTHUMBRIAN COAST, ESKIMO, MARSHALL, BLOUDAN, and ELSI.

I saw her 2 days earlier Ron. (I found a 1961 notebook. MARSHALL & BLOUDAN were also there that day too.)
ESKIMO had arrived 7/2/61 via Grangemouth and sailed on the 13th for Quebec.

That first visit referred to in the article was in December 1959 I believe. She arrived December 13th and sailed on the 23rd. (A great Christmas in the Atlantic for the crew!)
