Blue Funnel/Elder Dempster's AUTOMEDON at South Bank Wharf (formerly Eston Jetty?) on 28/1/1977.
7416 gt she was built as CYCLOPS in 1948 by Scotts' SB & E Co Ltd, Greenock (yn 639).
She arrived at Dalmuir 25/8/1977 to be broken up by W.H. Arnott Young & Co Ltd.

No prizes for identifying the passing dredger.

I piloted her into Eston Jetty in the wee small hours of Jan 26th 1977.

Only "Bluey" I was ever aboard.

Looking at this pic I am glad it was in the dark. Would
have been upset to see a "Bluey" looking so scruffy even
though she was running for E.D.s at the time.

Obvious question, why Eston Jetty for a cargo liner?
Was it then used for other than bulks, or was it a lay-by for her?

By coincidence this was one of only 3 Blue Funnels that I logged on the Tees in my early days, she was seen on 18/06/1960.
ATREUS 14/05/1960
LAOMEDON late 1959 up to when I started a diary early April 1960.
Perhaps there was this small run of them for some special reason, butting in on the usual Far East Conference sailings by group company Glen, and the Ben Line.

AUTOMEDON (5083291), Elder Dempster Lines Ltd, 7416gt,
completed Scotts' SB, Greenock, 12-1948
1948 CYCLOPS - 1975 AUTOMEDON
BU Dalmuir 25.8.77 [W.H.Arnott Young & Co Ltd]

She must have arrived to lay-by at Eston Jetty, awaiting berth, as by the following Sunday, 30 January 1977, she was in Tees Dock when I recorded this photograph:

The "disaster" that befell me immediately thereafter has already been recorded for Forumites in my post of 9 December 2012 re the ASCANIUS! Although why I then said I could not find my AUTOMEDON negative when I went straight to it tonight, I just don't know!! See: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=7935

There seemed to be a spate of Blue Flues coming to Middlesbrough Dock every month or two, late 1959-1960.
e.g. LAOMEDON ? 1959,
AUTOLYCUS late November 1959,
AGAPENOR before Xmas 1959,
ANCHISES February 1960,
LAOMEDON early April 1960,
ATREUS mid May 1960,
AUTOMEDON (the earlier one built '49, scrapped '72) mid June 1960
- maybe others

Thanks Mike, it was of course the earlier one we saw in 1960, not this one in the photo!
