From the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club history:

HY Tyne is the third RNYC House Yacht to bear the name. She is a Trinity House Light Vessel (LV50) built in wood in 1879 which makes her one of the last remaining wooden light vessels still afloat. She was designed to be towed to her station and was not fitted with an engine.

Her service history is largely unknown owing to the destruction of Trinity House records by bombing in 1940. She was stationed at Seven Spit, Warner and at Calshot Spit before being taken out of service and sold to a breakers yard at Ipswich in 1952. The Club eventually purchased the vessel and she was towed to Blyth arriving on 3rd August 1952. After an extensive refit she was commissioned in 1954 and remains in daily use, although over the years it has been necessary to remove the light and the top-mast.

She is recorded in the National Register of Historic Vessels with the certificate number 141.
