The Danzig a German light cruiser was taken by Britain as part of war reparations and sent to Whitby for scrapping to provide work for the town in 1921. The Bremen Class light cruiser 365 feet long & displacing 3226 tons could have been the largest ship ever to enter Whitby harbour. Her twin triple expansion engines gave her a speed of 22 knots and she was open to the public before she was scrapped.

She would have been a splendid sight passing through the Whitby swing bridge (the current bridge dates from 1908).
