50 YEARS AGO TODAY - BONANZA

1 September 1966, my first ever visit to Hull.
It would be train from Middlesbrough to Darlington, Darlington to York or Leeds, York or Leeds to Hull Paragon.
Caught the bus along Hedon Road to near the King George V Dock entrance.
An older chap showed me a gap in the fence to gain access to dock estate, although as far as I recall I never subsequently had any bother going in via the proper entrance .... until restrictions started. Apparently, looking back in my archives, that gap was a well-used short-cut next to the New Inn.
I then spent the rest of the day walking the whole dock system (spaced out over 7 miles I seem to recall), noting 137 different ship names and photographing 24 of them with my Box Brownie style camera. Finishing at the Pier-Head before catching the train back home. Yes, those were the days!

BONANZA (5047924), A/S Ganger Rolf, Norway, 7148gt, completed Gothenburg 6-1953.
1970 Thorsisle (Norway), 1975 Saudi Glory (?), 1976 Baupre Island (Panama),
BU Kaohsiung 9.87 [Chi Hsiang Steel Enterprise]

Ron, the entrance by the New Inn was an foot entrance for dockers, there may have been a BT policeman on it from time to time but seems not all of the time! My first visit was June 1964 and from York I took the train via the old Pocklington and Market Weighton line which came into Hull via Beverley, strange looking back that I passed through Cottingham which was to become my home many years later! Must admit that prior to working in the port, all my visits to Alex/KG were limited to the riverside path, I never dared to enter!

Used that entrance quite a bit in the 80's, saved the long walk from Marfleet to the main gate :)

as for Bonanza, when I worked at Escombe's we had several large, framed photos of vessels on the walls, a Skyfotos view of Bonanza being one of them. When the office was being closed down I was hoping to liberate some of them but alas they disappeared before I had chance.

She would have been on the West Coast North America service I guess, we had on that Olsen, Westfal-Larsen, French Line and Holland America from time to time as well as Furness Withy of course.

p.s. I noted BONANZA at Hull also on 23 May 1966. The service ran off 5/6 Sheds KG.
