The Battle class destroyer Barrosa, completed by John Brown in 1947 and later converted to a radar-picket, seen on 9 December 1978, soon after arrival for demolition.

was not broken up - more like picked at
she ended up in the drydocks and was one of the first ships I photographed using a 35mm camera in 1979.
Her breaking up was a drawn out affair
When her sister CORUNNA arrived for breaking they could not get her into a drydock because the breakers had forgotten to allow for her sonar underneath her keel. Bit of a problem and they literally found out about it when the pilot boarded and asked what the ship's draft was so she lay at the Dun Cow until there was a spring tide to get her over the dock sill.
He Ho !!

CORUNNA was the first to arrive on the 11th September 1975 for breaking by C F Booth.

Now I have BARROSA as arriving on the 20th December 1978 but if you saw her on the 9th, I wonder if this was the date she entered the Dry Dock for breaking......... Hmmm
By that time it was H K Vickers.

Yes Matapan had a definite problem with all her extra bits following conversion.

Could have applied to both of them though..........
