DANBY CROSS (1961)

One of the better products of my dad's old bellows camera!

This was the new tug DANBY CROSS on 9 August 1961. How new? Well, years later, John Proud's book SEAHORSES OF THE TEES told me she was completed at Faversham on 4 August 1961 - and she still had to sail up to the Tees!

50 years later on 29 March 2011 what a thrill it was to spot her in Rotterdam as she now is, the Spido vessel OSTARA.

Considering TT had one of the most modern tug fleets in the early 60's it seems a very backward step for the Hutton (1958), Banbury (1958) and Danby (1961) to to completly open bridges, especially when the Erimus (1960) had an enclosed one.

I know most Skipper's used the flying bridge to con the other tugs, but at least they had the comfort of a Wheelhouse when required.

It must have been fun on a dark Winters night with the rain lashing down and a Gale blowing!!

I assume these three were considered to be 'River Tugs'.

I think this is one of my most favourite ever ship photos what I took!
Head tug for BALTIC TRADER leaving Middlesbrough Wharf (former Tyne-Tees/Dent's Wharves) on 6 June 1967:

and taking the strain:

Ron,may I suggest you are wrong, this pic shows the stern tug !!

What we used to do was start the ship swinging with the after backspring
on the quay. The tug would then "Back down inside" and pick up the spring
from the quay , tow the stern round, then knock out when the ship was head to sea.

Danby Cross was an ideal tug for this manoeuvre, as although she did not
have much power she could "Turn on a sixpence"

( Note, no towline to the focstle and the wash shows the tug moving astern )

This was a way of swinging we often used at Dents.and Billingham Reach on the ebb.

Tony,

You know what! After 46 years I simply can't remember! Interesting that the companion view mentioned in the previous post seems to show no tow ropes attached, unless the bow tug was hidden on the port side?

I will, of course, bow to your expertise. I still like the photo!!!!!

It was a "One Tug Job" Ron. UBC would never pay for 2 tugs.

Super photo, great memorabilia.
