COPENHAGEN

COPENHAGEN

Postby MadMaxLab » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:30 am

A Mackem - not sure if it belongs here !

Launched, un-named, by Vickers at Barrow on 20/12/1972 and arrived on the Tyne in April/May 1974 to be completd by Swan's.

Renamed ODESSA in 1975; ODESSA I in 1999; ODESSA in 2001; SYDNEY in 2007. Arrived at Alang on 19/1/2007 to be broken up.

A correspondant in Barrow told me the original name was supposed to be something like PRINS HENRIK OF DENMARK and this was on the bow or nameboard when she was launched. I cannot find my photo and negative of the ship when she arrived on the Tyne to check this. Can anybody confirm this ?

The intended name was PRINS HENRIK AF DANMARK but she was not named on Launch.

I don't think she was named COPENHAGEN until she was completed on the Tyne.

She ran her first trials in March 1974 and in April her owners, Nordline, put her up for sale after they ran into financial difficulties.

She went to the Black Sea SS Co as ODESSA in May 1975 and her 'Handing Over' voyage from Liverpool to Leningrad was on the 18th July 1975.

More pictures as ODESSA in Bergen and Naples.

Was she laid up in Naples during the ODESSA, ODESSA 1, ODESSA renaming period? I photographed her in May 1998 in the harbour, and again in what seemed to be the same position in August 2002.
In 1998 she was tied near CARLO R ex RANGATIRA from Walker.
