Some four months after her completion she was attacked by enemy aircraft about 195 nautical miles off the coast of Portugal while on passage from Newport, Wales, to Algiers carrying military supplies. Taken in tow by the tug EMPIRE SAMSON she reached Lisbon five days later
In July 1944 the ship struck a mine off the French coast at Juno Beach where she was beached. Refloated the next day she was towed to the River Tees for repair
